常言道：「人身多污穢。」佛家勉勵佛弟子，「自淨其意，是諸佛教」，其中「污穢」一詞，可譯為「filthy」。

蓮生活佛盧勝彥在其著作「孤燈下的思維」一書，在「地球是監獄」一文，清楚描述「地球」：

「這人間地球，最多煩惱，最多無常，最無快樂，最多污穢，最多黑暗。有些人也等於活在地獄、活如餓鬼、活像畜生之中，地球難道就不是監獄嗎？」內容英譯如下：

「This human planet has the most worries and the most impermanence, it is the least happy, the filthiest and the darkest place.

Some people live as though in a hell, like hungry ghosts and animals. Isn't earth a prison？」(Translated by Padmakumara Translation Team)
